I study the fishes, crustaceans and gelatinous animals of the ocean's twilight and midnight zones: how they are distributed in depth, how they migrate every night, and how much carbon they carry and respire in the deep sea.

Research

My research focuses on the ecology of meso- and bathypelagic fishes and other micronekton, and on how ocean conditions shape where they live and how they move. I combine stratified net sampling, ship and moored acoustics, physiology and respiration measurements to link the biology of individual animals with what they do for the whole ocean: feeding predators and transporting carbon to depth through the biological carbon pump.

Life history and functional traits

Age, growth, reproduction, buoyancy and swimbladder properties of lanternfishes and bristlemouths, the most abundant vertebrates on Earth.

Active carbon flux

Respiration, remineralisation and seasonal active flux by migrant and non-migrant micronekton and gelatinous zooplankton.

Acoustics and vertical structure

Interpreting echoes from deep scattering layers and resolving the vertical structure of fish assemblages from the surface to the bathypelagic zone.

At sea

Most of my data start on deck. We deploy the Mesopelagos net from the stern to sample the twilight zone, sort the catch on board and identify every group to species under the microscope. One subsample is kept for taxonomy and another goes to metabolic analyses to estimate respiration and active carbon flux.

Where I have worked at sea

Map of oceanographic cruises in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of California: MAFIA, BATHYPELAGIC, TRIATLAS M158, SUMMER, SUMMER M185 and DESAFIO, with sampling stations from the Iberian Peninsula and Canary Islands to the equatorial and South Atlantic

Nets tell us who is down there; sound tells us where they are and how they move. I process and interpret data from the ship's EK80 echosounder and from instruments lowered on the CTD (LADCP and an autonomous AZFP echosounder) to follow the deep scattering layers through the day and along entire ocean transects.

Acoustic sampling of the twilight zone: a research vessel with its EK80 echosounder beam and a CTD rosette carrying LADCPs and an AZFP echosounder, with echograms at 18 and 38 kHz showing the daily migration of scattering layers, a full-depth transect at 38 kHz, and day versus night backscatter profiles
Listening to the twilight zone: ship and CTD-mounted echosounders reveal the daily migration of the deep scattering layers. Sarmiento-Lezcano et al. (in prep.). Click to enlarge.
